Children's exposure to screens, tablets, televisions, video games, etc. does it present risks? If yes, which ones ? Is it possible to prevent them? And to regulate the access to the screens without prohibiting it? To answer these questions that all parents ask themselves, the Academy of Sciences has studied the work of researchers in neurobiology, psychology, psychiatry and medicine. Here are his main conclusions.
For babies from 0 to 2 years old: yes to the interactive tablet with an adult
- Babies come into the world with a very beautiful heritage: a brain that will make it possible to establish a million billion connections between neurons. This development is controlled by both genes and experience, that is to say, the environment of the child, which is now part of tablets, screens, etc.
- Truly programmed to learn, babies can very well explore a digital touch screen, as they explore a soft toy, a rattle, colored cubes.
YES to ... the discovery of visual and tactile tablets.
- It is beneficial when it is accompanied by the help of parents, grandparents or older children in the family. This can participate in the early awakening of babies to the world of screens.
NO to ... passive and isolated exposure on the screen
- A toddler who is left alone in front of a television screen, whether in front of a TV program or a DVD, does not benefit from it, on the contrary. Such exposure can have negative effects: language delays, weight gain, lack of concentration and attention, risk of adopting a passive attitude towards the world.
